## BIG IDEAS
- Relies on [[Hypothesis|hypotheses]], [[Scientific Theories|scientific theories]], [[Scientific laws|scientific laws]], and [[Models|models]].
## Definition
There are two acceptable definitions of science:
- A way of knowing
- A body of knowledge
This can lead to different approaches to science. There are individuals who attempt to memorize facts and those who attempt to understand facts.
>[!tip]
>Understanding requires a minimum set of memorized facts. There are individuals employed in the US school system who think memorization is not necessary. This is foolish.
## Scientific Method
- Let's start the review by providing a basic definition of science; that is, science is a way to organize knowledge and process information. Not every advance in science follows the same process but there are accepted norms usually set by scientific journals and editors.
- One accepted model for explaining the process of science is the hypothetico-deductive model.
- In general, discussions of scientific studies begin with observations; both qualitative and quantitative are collected during the experimentation stage of science and these data are organized and analyzed as the researchers look for patterns. Keep in mind that our model to describe the scientific process is circular, there is no actual starting point.
