- Scatter plots are for determining patterns between two physical quantities.
- The two quantities are plotted on an x- and y- coordinate system revealing a correlation.
- The independent variable is plotted on the x-axis (horizontal axis).
- The dependent variable is plotted on the y-axis (vertical axis).
- Each dot represents one data observation (a recorded measurement).

- A scatter plot begins with the plotting of the paired values as a point on a x-y coordinate system then a best line of fit is drawn.
- The “dots” are not connected with the line.
- A line of best fit is a straight line balancing the points above and below the line.
- The line of best fit is used to study the relation between the two variables.
