## BIG IDEAS
- Also known as the Cartesian system.
- Developed by Rene Descartes.
- Used to describe the position of an object.
- A link between algebra and geometry
## Number Line
The simplest example of a coordinate system is the identification of points on a line with real numbers using the number line.
## Cartesian coordinate system
Coordinate axes have a positive and negative ends with an origin where the two axes cross.
>[!info] What is the *s-axis*? Why is *s* used sometimes for distance?
>The *s-axis* is a generic term for any axis.
The [[Origin|origin]] is am important feature of any coordinate system.
The Cartesian coordinates of a point are usually written in parentheses and separated by commas, such as (0,5), where the first number is the x-axis and the second is the y-axis.
