## BIG IDEAS
- Mechanics is the study of [[Rest and Motion|motion]].
- May be divided into [[Notes Vault/Physics Notes Vault/Kinematics/Kinematics|kinematics]] and [[Notes Vault/Physics Notes Vault/Dynamics/Dynamics|dynamics]].
----
The word mechanics originates from the Greek word *mechane* which means machine or tool. Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and other people of ancient times constructed machines for transportation and military purposes. The operation of these machines was based on levers, wheels and ropes. The investigation of these operations gave birth to the science about the motion of objects.[^1]
### Branches
Classical mechanics is generally split between kinematics and dynamics.
- [[Notes Vault/Physics Notes Vault/Kinematics/Kinematics|Kinematics]] is a mathematical description of motion.
- [[Notes Vault/Physics Notes Vault/Dynamics/Dynamics|Dynamics]] is an explanation of motion in terms of its causes.
Important topics include [[Newton's Laws|Newton's Laws of Motion]], [[Conservation Laws]], and [[Work-Energy Theorem]].
