## BIG IDEAS
- Position is the location of an object in space.
- Position is always measured relative to a chosen [[Reference frame]].
- Position measurements are made by laying a [[Coordinate System|coordinate system]] grid over a [[Motion Diagram|motion diagram]].
- The symbol $x$ is used to represent the position along a straight line.
- $\vec{r}$ is used to represent the position vector in three-dimensional space.
>[!info]
>In math, a horizontal axis is usually labeled the _x-axis_, so we use the symbol $x$ to represent a position. The letter p cannot be used because it is reserved for momentum.
Position is a [[Vectors|vector quantity]], therefore, direction from the origin is important.
It’s possible to have a negative position (by convention this would be left of the origin).
Some books may use $\vec{x}$ as the symbol for position.
Position is also combined with the [[Time|time]] at which the position is checked. <span style="background:#d3f8b6">This time is shown as a subscript</span>. For example, $x_0$ is the initial time. This initial type is pronounced *x-naught*. Generally the final position does not have a subscript.
